Dr Sandy Chen has joined the BIRU to oversee the flow cytometry facility following the retirement of Stephen Edgar. Sandy has a background in cancer biology and drug development, having completed her PhD at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre.

Flow cytometry featured prominently in her work looking at the conventional and immunologic response to anti-cancer drugs.

Sandy subsequently moved to Norway to work on cancer drug development at the University of Bergen where she was exposed to the wonderful world of FACS (Fluorescence Activated Cell Sorting).

She is looking forward to serving and growing the flow cytometry community at FMHS.

Yohanes Nursalim is covering for Ratish Kurian who is currently away on extended leave and will be working part-time while completing his PhD.

Yohanes has worked in various locations at the University since 2015 and has experience working with multiple different microscope imaging techniques. As part of his PhD, Yohanes conducted investigations into the nature of the human placenta and has knowledge about other experimental assay including cell culture and molecular work.

Yohanes will be looking after the MetaSystems VSlide slide scanner, the Hitachi TM3030 Plus scanning electron microscope and the FEI Tecnai Spirit TWIN transmission electron microscope.

Yohanes will also be managing the electron microscope laboratory space. Yohanes is looking forward to supporting BIRU users and hopes that he can provide a significantly positive impact on their work.
