The new Hitachi Tabletop scanning electron microscope (TM3030Plus) has arrived and been installed successfully. Scanning electron microscopy is a technique not previously available at BIRU or at the Grafton campus so it's very exciting to have this equipment now available onsite. The machine features an ultra-variable pressure secondary electron detector (SE) for low vacuum imaging and a high sensitivity back-scattered electron detector (BSE). It is also equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX) for elemental analysis.

A sputter coater is already available for specimen preparation and the critical point dryer will be installed soon.

Anyone interested in knowing more about the new system and user charges should contact Hilary Holloway. Hilary is the person in charge and the first point of contact for all enquiries.
