Dr David Crossman has been appointed as the new Academic Director of the BIRU, replacing Dr Gus Grey who has moved to a new role.

David is a Senior Research Fellow and Principal Investigator of the Cardiac Nanobiology Group in the Department of Physiology, School of Medical Sciences. David completed a BSc(Hons) in Biochemistry at Otago University before moving to The University of Auckland where he graduated with a PhD in Biological Sciences in 2003.

He then worked in industry in preclinical drug development where he utilised fluorescence confocal microscopy to characterise the reverse remodelling of cardiac muscle in the diabetic heart in response to drug therapy.

In 2006, he moved to the Department of Physiology where he developed expertise in state-of-the-art-fluorescence microscopy with a focus on super-resolution microscopy to elucidate the nanoscale structural remodelling that drives the pathophysiology of the failing heart, knowledge that is critical in identifying targets for future therapeutics.

David is a member of Manaaki Mānawa Centre for Heart Research at the University of Auckland and the national Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) Pūtahi Manawa | Healthy Hearts for Aotearoa New Zealand. He is the course director of MEDSCI 703 – Advanced Biomedical Imaging and is passionate about developing graduate student expertise in the physics of imaging so that they can optimise the data obtained in their imaging-based experiments.

David is excited about the new role and is looking forward to maintaining the high levels of technical support and instrumentation provided by the BIRU to support the research community.
