Biomedical Imaging Research Unit

Our unit

The BIRU facility has two main areas; optical microscopy and electron microscopy. Lab coats must be worn in the Optical Microscopy Laboratory and the Electron Microscopy Laboratory. They are not necessary when using the electron microscope. Guest lab coats will be provided for people from outside the Grafton campus. Fully enclosed shoes are also required.

Lockers are provided outside the laboratory so that people can secure their belongings safely rather than bring them into the lab. No food or drink can be consumed within the laboratory areas.

The unit has a small library of books on biomedical imaging techniques and their applications, including Electron Microscopy, Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), 3D imaging and image analysis. Books may be borrowed for short periods of time but should not be removed from the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

Publications which include work arising from use of BIRU facilities should acknowledge the unit. We would be grateful to receive a or PDF of each published paper for the BIRU collection. The BIRU will mount and display journal covers which use images obtained in the unit. One additional mounted copy will be provided to the image owner.
