Medical Imaging

For postgraduates

The PGCertHSc (Medical Imaging), PGCertHSc (Mammography) and PGDipHSc (Medical Imaging) programmes offer courses suitable for registered Medical Imaging Technologists who wish to advance their career and/or own professional development.

Within the Medical Imaging specialisations, specific pathways are defined for Computed Tomography (CT), Image Evaluation and Nuclear Medicine. Alternatively, students can choose to pursue a generic Medical Imaging programme by selecting courses tailored to their own personal requirements.

The PGDipHSc (MRI), PGDipHSc (Ultrasound) and PGDipHSc (Medical Imaging – Nuclear Medicine pathway) programmes provide a route to registration for Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists, Sonographers and Nuclear Medicine Technologists in New Zealand. Entry to these programmes is restricted to students who have already obtained a relevant clinical training position in a University of Auckland approved Medical Imaging department.

Medical Imaging Postgraduate Courses

All of these programmes are predominantly comprised of courses selected from the Medical Imaging (MEDIMAGE) and/or Clinical Imaging (CLINIMAG) course schedules. These courses will present the state of the art in each discipline, be research-led and supported by the cutting-edge clinical and educational facilities offered in the faculty.

A clinical competency assessment requirement must be successfully completed for the specialty modalities of Mammography, MRI, Nuclear Medicine, and Ultrasound. For the postgraduate diploma programmes, this will enable registration with the Medical Radiation Technologists Board (MRTB) in the appropriate scope of practice.

All MEDIMAGE and CLINIMAG courses are worth 15 points and are available by distance learning (with the exception of the on-campus ultrasound course CLINIMAG 709).

A number of our courses include an optional on-campus block course. These block courses are delivered at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at the Grafton Campus.

Many of the Medical Imaging (MEDIMAGE) courses are suitable for a broad range of students such as those with an interest in clinical medical imaging, allied health professions, medical physics or bio-engineering.

The Clinical Imaging (CLINIMAG) courses offered are primarily for Medical Imaging Technologists with an appropriate undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification. Additionally, entry to some of the CLINIMAG courses requires the student to have obtained a relevant clinical training position. Please refer to individual course outlines for specific requirements of courses requiring a clinical position.

Elective courses may be selected from the postgraduate courses listed in the Master of Health Sciences Schedule, and include a wide range such as:

  • Research Methods in Health
  • Clinical Supervision
  • Health Management
  • Health Leadership
  • Health and Public Policy
  • Health Psychology
  • Principles of Health Informatics
  • Foundations of Māori Health
  • Pacific Health
