Multi Criteria Decision Analysis in Health Care Event as iCalendar
02 April 2014
12:30 - 1:30pm
Venue: Room 730-441, Building 730, Tāmaki Innovation Campus
The assessment of healthcare interventions is relevant to several decisions e.g. benefit-risk assessment, health technology assessment, and shared decision making. These decisions typically require tradeoffs between multiple value criteria but are often made in a manner that only implicitly considers these criteria or their value. Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods can support decision makers by taking into account multiple criteria in an explicit manner. In this presentation, first, an overview of the different MCDA applications in health care is provided. Next, the diversity of different MCDA approaches is highlighted by describing the methodological decisions required at each step of the MCDA process. The presentation concludes with recommendations for further research required to develop guidance for those planning to use MCDA to support health care decision making.
Speaker : Dr Praveen Thokala is a modeller at Health Economics and Decision Science in the School of Health and Related Research at the University of Sheffield. He has worked on several health economics projects including health technology assessments (HTA) and diagnostic assessments for the National Institute for Health Research and the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). His experience includes working with NICE’s decision support unit on the applicability of MCDA in HTA. He’s currently supervising two PhD students in MCDA and has supported public health commissioners at local authorities in UK using MCDA approaches.
