The Department of Physiology has broad teaching and research representation within
the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and the Faculty of Science. Our staff
contribute lectures and laboratory teaching in 31 courses (16 in Science and 15 in Medicine, Nursing
and Nutrition).
To deliver our innovative research-informed teaching we have 16 full-time academic staff and a clinical teacher. In addition, we have 18 Research Fellows who are funded
by national and international research contracts. Research Fellows also provide
teaching services. The department is ably supported by seven general staff and 10 research
technicians. Including our graduate students, the Department of Physiology consists
of a team of more than 75 people who contribute to our teaching and research activities.
The Department of Physiology produced more than 50 research publications in 2003.
In addition, the research groups had an outstandingly successful year in attracting
competitive external research funds which provides an enormous impetus for our research
programmes. This in turn fuels our research-led teaching edict. The advanced research-based
teaching programmes and research-centric focus are a feature of our dynamic department.
