Student's guide to Hamilton

All assignments should be handed to the Manager of the Clinical Campus for forwarding to the School of Medicine, Auckland. Please refer to your run information booklet for exact details.

Should it be necessary or unavoidable for you to miss assessments or time in the hospital please make sure your run supervisor and the School Manager are made aware of the situation. You may be required to provide a Medical Certificate.

Students cohorted to the Waikato Clinical Campus do not have accommodation provided for them. There is a wide range of private accommodation available within easy walking distance to Waikato Hospital. Suburbs closest to the hospital include: Melville, Hamilton East, Hamilton West, Glenview, Deanwell and Fitzroy.

Students carrying out selective and elective attachments are responsible for their own accommodation costs.

There are numerous bank branches throughout Hamilton. Those located in Hamilton East and in the main city centre are closest to Waikato Hospital. There are 2 ATM machines on Waikato Hospital Campus located on Level 01, Menzies Building and on Level 1, Hague Road Car park building, opposite the lifts.

Hamilton City, Victoria and Hood Streets come alive every night with many bars to choose from. Ask around the hospital for the current “hot spots”.

Chaplains are available at Waikato Hospital for spiritual and emotional support for patients, family and staff of all faiths or none.

Quiet room

The quiet Room is available for prayer and reflection. The Quiet Room is on B1 (street level) Menzies Building.

Chapel

Services of Worship are held in the chapel on Level 1, Menzies Building every Sunday at 10am.

There are numerous computers available for student use at the Waikato Clinical Campus and at the Waikato Hospital library. These are available during opening hours and offer free internet and wifi use (to be used responsibly). A limited number of after hours computers linked directly to The University of Auckland and WDHB network are available from 4.30pm, Waiora Waikato Building, Level 4 (access from north end of the building, via llifts on main corridor).

There are many restaurants spanning a full ethnic range.

The Hamilton Zoo (housing one of the largest bird aviaries in the South Pacific), Hamilton City Gardens and Waikato Museum of Art and History, Artspost are all worth a visit. For the less intrepid Waterworld offers a few fun hours. Don’t forget to support the Waikato Chiefs.

Financial advice is not directly available while at Waikato Hospital. Please utilise the services provided at the City Campus (Auckland). Student Finance Advisers counsel students on major sources of funding available to them, and on budgeting and financial planning. They administer the Student Emergency Fund, the Access Awards, and the Final Year Undergraduate grants.

Should you encounter problems with the behaviour of staff or fellow students that is unwanted, unacceptable or offensive it may be harassment. University policy is that harassment and discrimination on any grounds are totally unacceptable.

Waikato Hospital has a zero tolerance policy towards harassment. For assistance please follow the Waikato DHB policy, located on each hospital ward or via the Waikato Hospital intranet.

Medical students based at Waikato Hospital are welcome to use the health services offered by the University of Waikato. This includes access to a general practitioner and counselling services. The University of Waikato Medical Centre is located at the University of Waikato.

The Waikato District Health Board Library has a core collection of books and journal titles, focusing on resources across all hospital specialities, as well as developing areas such as physiotherapy, rehabilitation, health statistics, general practice and management. It also has a valuable historical book collection. When you arrive at Waikato Hospital please register with the library for borrowing access.

Replacement batteries are issued at the Waikato Clinical School reception desk.

Parking is available on Waikato Hospital Campus site at a reduced cost to students of $7/week for unlimited entry and exit (see the Parking Office, Waikato Hospital – you must show your Student ID) – maximum of 2 weeks at a time.

Bike lock up is available in secure cages – FREE key available from the Parking Office (you must show your Staff ID).

There are 3 bike cages – Parking Office (also toilets and showers located here), Hague Road Carpark Building and the Pembroke Street Carpark Building.

Self-service card-operated photocopiers are available at the Waikato DHB Library ($10 and $5 amounts) or one photocopier is coin-operated. Please enquire at the library regarding the purchase of a card or change. For academic needs the receptionist at the Waikato Clinical School will provide photocopy services.

The Waikato region offers a diverse range of activities such as tramping, mountain biking (Rotorua and Te Aroha), hot pools (Rotorua and Te Aroha) and much more. It also offers easy access to the lower Central North Island (Rotorua, Lake Taupo, Waitomo) and a whole range of activities. A trip to Raglan (30 minutes from Hamilton) is a must while in the Waikato for its beautiful beach at Whale Bay, great range of restaurants, art galleries and clothing.

Swimming/Aqua Sports – Gallagher Aquatic Centre, located 1km from the Hospital, Collins Road, phone 07 958 5890

Lake Rotoroa, a 3.8km walk/run located minutes from the hospital. The Lake is full of bird and aquatic life and supports a lakeside café. It is also surrounded by sports fields and hosts many events. Pick up a “Lake Rotoroa Esplanade Walkway” leaflet – located outside the Waikato Hospital cafeteria.

Mountain Biking – both Te Aroha and Rotorua offer great mountain biking tracks.

Tramping – the Waikato Region contains some of the most varied scenery in New Zealand and caters to all level of trampers.

Many shopping areas in Hamilton - Central city, the Centre Place Mall, Te Awa, The Base Te Rapa, and Westfield Mall, Chartwell.  

On weekends markets can be found in any number of places including:

• The Frankton markets on Saturdays - Commerce Street 8am to 1pm,  Hamilton Night Market on Saturday from 5pm to 11pm - K Mart, 25 Bryce Street
• Farmers Market (River Road carpark, 204 River Road,) every Sunday 8am to noon, Cambridge Farmers market every Saturday 8am to noon
• Cambridge Trash n Treasure market every second Sunday 8.30 to 1.30pm
• The Tamahere Country Market is held at the St Stephen’s Church grounds, corner of Airport Rd and Tamahere Drive, (just off State Highway 1) on the third Saturday of each month from 8am to 1pm.
• The Gordonton Market is held 2nd Saturday of every month from 8.30am-1pm on the Hukanui Park Grounds, next to the Gordonton Hall on Gordonton Road. (About 8 minutes north of Rototuna)
