Facebook study through crowdsourcing

Why conduct this study?

  • Social media sites such as Facebook are able to manipulate the advertisements seen by users on Facebook based on information the users share with Facebook, personal information about users from their Facebook account (e.g. age, gender, location etc.), pages users like or engage with, ads users click on and apps and websites they use even when off Facebook.
  •  With more than 1 billion users globally, Facebook is the world’s largest social network. In 2012, six billion fast food ads appeared on Facebook with Starbucks, McDonald’s and Subway ranking among the top ten brands globally.
  • In New Zealand Whittaker's Chocolate Lovers and KFC brand have over 300 thousand fans.
  • Food and beverage marketing and frequent exposure to brands is recognised as an important factor influencing food choices related to obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases.
  • Currently in New Zealand there are no regulations or effective policies in place to reduce exposure of children to marketing of unhealthy food products through social media.
  • The monitoring of children’s exposure to food and beverage promotions, and the content of these promotions, is necessary to generate evidence to understand the extent of the problem, and to determine appropriate and effective policy response.

BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE INSTRUCTIONS:

STEP 1: Fill out the online questionnaire

The questionnaire is online-based. The link of the questionnaire has been sent to you by email together with the link to these instructions.

Please submit the completed questionnaire within two weeks from reception.

STEP 2: Become ‘friends’ with 'Boyd Swinburn' on Facebook.

All participants involved in this study will need to become friends with ‘Boyd Swinburn’. This is the account of the main researcher (Professor Boyd Swinburn).

  1. Search ‘Boyd Swinburn’ in your Facebook search window.
  2. Send a request to become friends.
  3. The researcher will accept the request as soon as possible.
  4. After completion of the study, the researcher will disconnect all ties with you (‘unfriend’ on Facebook). You can disconnect ties as well after participation in the study.

PLEASE ‘UNFRIEND' WITH 'BOYD SWINBURN' AFTER YOU HAVE SENT THROUGH THE ADVERTISEMENTS.

STEP 3: Send food advertisements to the researcher

Please note in order for this step to be completed, YOU need to become friends with ‘Boyd Swinburn’ on FACEBOOK.

Please post/share on 'Boyd Swinburn’s' Timeline, ALL food and beverage advertisements within your Facebook newsfeed over the last three days.

PLEASE EXCLUDE CURRENT DAY.

For ALL food and beverage advertisements (pictures and videos) within your Facebook newsfeed over the last three days (excluding currrent day):

  1. Go to your newsfeed page
  2. Click on ‘share’ at the bottom of each advertisement of ALL advertisements related to food and beverages in last 3 days (Scroll down the newsfeed to view and share the last 3 days)
  3. Select at the top ‘On a friend’s Timeline’
  4. Search and select ‘Boyd Swinburn’
  5. Enter your participant ID number and press on post to send the advertisements to the Facebook account of the researcher

Please note: If you log on to Facebook without using the Facebook app via your smartphone, STEP 3 will differ. You cannot share the advertisements ‘on a friends Timeline’, instead you will need to ‘share’ the advertisement through a private message to ‘Boyd Swinburn’. The other steps are the same as above.

All advertisements related to food and beverages (brands, companies, events, recipes) should be forwarded, including advertisements that are promoted, advertisements of brands that you did not ‘like’ and advertisements forwarded by your friends appearing in your newsfeed.  After saving the advertisements at the research institute, the posts you shared on Facebook will be deleted on the Timeline. The participant ID will be the only link kept after advertisement and questionnaire have been linked.

Please note that the Facebook account ‘Boyd Swinburn’ has been set up so that ONLY the researcher can view what is shared on their timeline by you.

You can also control your privacy settings under ‘settings’ on Facebook.

STEP 4: Send advertisements only ONCE seen on the RIGHT HAND side of your Facebook newsfeed

This step is only for those using a computer/laptop or iPad/tablet (without the Facebook app) to log on to Facebook (smartphone/iPad/tablet with Facebook app do not show these advertisements on the right hand side).

Please upload/post a screen shot (see screen shot instructions in the Participant Instruction Sheet above) on ‘Boyd Swinburn’s Timeline of the advertisements seen (both food-related and non-food related advertisements) on the RIGHT HAND side of your Facebook newsfeed through the following procedure:

  1. Click on your Facebook newsfeed and view all the advertisements seen on the right hand side of the newsfeed
  2. Take a screen shot (this means screen has been copied) of the advertisements. See screen shot instructions above. Save the image on your desktop
  3. Search and select ‘Boyd Swinburn’
  4. On ‘Boyd Swinburn’s’ Timeline upload the image by clicking on ‘photo/video' and enter your Participant ID number which has been allocated to you.
  5. Two screen shots may be needed to capture all the advertisements at the top and bottom of the page.

THIS STEP ONLY NEEDS TO BE DONE ONCE even if the advertisements change.

Remember you are taking a screen shot of all advertisments (food and non food related).

PLEASE ONLY SEND US THE ADVERTISEMENTS

DO NOT SEND US ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION
