Internship Providers Reflections

ADHB / Tara Argent / Surgery, Cardiac and Perioperative Services

I was approached to become the Auckland DHB representative and involved with the intern programme in conjunction with The University of Auckland. The programme has been an excellent platform for new graduates to be able to continue to study and gain work experience.

We were very lucky to have a high calibre of applicants for the internship. Using exactly the same process as we do for any other Auckland DHB position we shortlisted five candidates. Following interview we appointed one intern within Adult Surgical Services In January this year. The relationship has been beneficial to both parties and we hope to increase the roles and number of internships within Auckland DHB in the future.

CMDHB / Louise McCarthy / Portfolio Manager – Primary Care

Counties Manukau Health has worked in partnership with the University of Auckland School of Population Health to provide an internship for a Bachelor of Health Sciences graduate.

A position was created in the primary care team, Planning and Funding, in a programme support role.

A number of students with relevant skills and qualifications applied for the role and we were fortunate to successfully appoint a student for a one year position.

The internship has provided Counties Manukau Health with a high quality graduate who has fitted in well with the team and has been able to take on specific projects working with Primary Health Organisations, general practice teams and other stakeholders in the health and community services sector. The experience has also been positive for the student, providing an opportunity to apply theory to practice and to further develop a career pathway.

Counties Manukau Health is supportive of maintaining a relationship with the University of Auckland to provide further internships for Bachelor of Health Sciences graduates.
