Our history

The department began teaching in 1973 with the appointment of Dr John Richards as Associate Professor. He was joined in 1978 by Associate Professor Ray West. In 1988 the first chair of General Practice was endowed by Dr Elaine Gurr and the inaugural professor was Dr Brian McAvoy.

  • Gregor Coster was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care from February 1995 to December 2004. Gregor was appointed the Dean of Graduate Studies from February 2005 to February 2011, he was also Chairman of the Board, Counties Manukau DHB from December 2007 and will complete his term as Chairman of the Board, November 2013.   • Bruce Arroll was Associate Professor and appointed Head of Department, General Practice and Primary Health Care in January 2005 through to November 2011. Bruce received a personal Chair and Professor in 2005. Bruce was later endowed with the Dr Elaine Gurr Chair in General Practice 2008.
  • Ngaire Kerse was awarded a personal Chair and Professor in 2010. She was then appointed Head of Department in General Practice and Primary Health Care November 2011 through to December 2012 and from January 2013 became Head of School of Population Health.
  • Felicity Goodyear-Smith was appointed Professor and Goodfellow Postgraduate Chair 1 January 2010 and was appointed Head of Department, General Practice and Primary Health Care in January 2013.
