Current work

'Ageing in Place for Older People with Dementia'

Nabeel's research will explore the factors associated with entry to residential care for people with dementia and identify future pathways for service development for people with dementia and their families. Also, the study seeks to identify and describe the optimal informal and formal support for older people with dementia and their families / whänau. The research will be undertaken through two phases using qualitative and quantitative approaches, each informing the other. Phase one will involve pilot interviews with up to ten older people with dementia and their primary carers will be invited to participate in hour long unstructured interviews. The interviews will be audio recorded and later transcribed verbatim. The transcripts will be analysed using a general inductive approach in order to generate themes concerning their care, support and needs. The themes will be used to develop a questionnaire, which will be combined with structured assessment tools. In phase two up to 300 people with dementia and their primary carers will be invited to participate in interviews using the interview schedule developed in phase I. Interviews will be up to one hour in length and will be undertaken in a location suitable for the participants. Both the person with dementia and their primary carer will be involved in the interviews and a separate self-completed survey will be left with the carer. Support will be provided to the carer to complete the tool if required. The participants will be approached a year later and the interview will be repeated. If the participants are not contactable, every effort will be made to ascertain whether they have entered residential care or deceased.
