Body Composition, Nutrition and Metabolism Research

Our research focuses on the body composition and other metabolic changes that accompany major surgery and illness. Nutritional and other interventions are investigated that can modulate these changes with consequent benefit to patients.

The Body Composition Laboratory located near the wards of the Auckland City Hospital has a 30-year history of research into the detailed compositional changes that accompany critical and surgical illness. A primary interest is characterising the changes in body protein, reflecting changes in muscle mass, that result from major insults to the body or from chronic illness and in the use of nutritional and other interventions to ameliorate these losses of functional tissue. This remains the only laboratory in the world able to measure such protein changes in critically ill patients.
