Course Prescription

Introduction to human biology through a study of the structure and function of mammalian organ systems. Topics of focus include: skin and derivatives, digestive, nervous, reproductive and urinary, bone, endocrine and circulatory systems. This course also exposes students to learning in a laboratory environment with a strong focus on microscopy and dissection.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Discuss how the relationship between organisational levels determines how organ system functions. (Capability 3 and 4)
  2. Interpret diagrams/graphs/illustrations of organs and organ systems. (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  3. Compare and contrast different components of organ systems. (Capability 3, 4, 5 and 6)
  4. Engage with learning in the laboratory environment and demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the theory and practical work. (Capability 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8)
  5. Explain how molecules function within the body and how cellular processes are regulated. (Capability 3, 4 and 5)

Workload Expectations

This course is a standard 12 point course and students are expected to spend 10 hours per week involved in each 15 point course that they are enrolled in.

For this course, you can expect 2 hours of lectures, a 1.5 hour tutorial, 2 hours of reading and thinking about the content and 2.5 hours of work on assignments and/or test preparation.

Delivery Mode

Campus Experience

Attendance is required at scheduled activities including labs/tutorials to complete components of the course. Lectures are organised for in-person attendance and will be available as recordings. Other learning activities including tutorials/labs will not be available as recordings. The activities for the course are scheduled as a standard weekly timetable.

Course materials are made available in a learning and collaboration tool called Canvas which also includes reading lists and lecture recordings (where available).

Learning Continuity
