Description


The systematic analysis of the physiological changes in ageing and the relationship of these changes to current beliefs and theories around the ageing process. Current issues around biogerontology are discussed.

Course outline


Aim

This course is designed for registered nurses and health professionals who have clinical expertise around the care of older people or have an academic interest in the biology of ageing. They may be working with older people and their families, in a range of settings including primary health care, specialist nursing and, acute and aged residential care.

The systematic analysis of the physiological changes in ageing, and the relationship of these changes to current beliefs and theories around the ageing process. Current issues around biogerontology are discussed.

This is an online course with no study day attendance requirement.

 

Learning outcomes


The student will: 

  • Explore the concept of biological ageing
  • Critically review the current understanding for the theoretical basis for ageing
  • Explore and analyse normal age-related biological changes the occur in mammalian systems including the eye, brain and nervous system, respiratory and cardiovascular systems, male and female reproductive systems and muscular skeletal systems
  • Examine and describe key components of human age-related disease processes including Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, cardiovascular and cerebral vascular disease, falls and osteoporosis.
