Cara Sturman

Student: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery

“I would like a career where I am working with people to improve their health and making a valuable contribution to society.

“I completed the first year of BSc Biomedical Science and then moved into the MBChB programme. I am now in the fifth year of my medical degree. “At the University of Auckland, anatomy is taught in small groups in the cadaver lab which is a special privilege. The lecturers are helpful and go out of their way to answer questions students have. The staff in the programme care about student wellbeing and spend time on this during the course.

“I enjoy clinical rotations for practical learning. We have the opportunity to change hospital and city every year of our clinical placements, which gives a scope of medicine through rural and central New Zealand. “At the end of my degree I will be a house officer and then I plan to apply for a specialty training scheme.

“I’m grateful to have received a University of Auckland Scholarship, which has helped me to afford to live and study in Auckland, away from my family in Wellington. Through the scholarship mentor programme I was partnered with an older medical student who helped me academically. “I’ve made lots of close friends during medical school. AUMSA (Auckland University Medical School Association) runs many social events. A highlight was going to the New Zealand medical student conference. I played hockey for a University hockey team which has been lots of fun, as well as playing indoor netball.”
