Student: Bachelor of Optometry
“I have wanted to become an optometrist for many years. I know how frustrating not being able to see can be and have realised that optometry allows you to make direct improvements in others’ lives. It also facilitates the development of close relationships between yourself and others in the community. One way I believe optometry stands out from other health professions is that you can (mostly) avoid gore and blood – which was a major positive for me!
“I believe optometry is a dynamic and challenging degree and career as it combines both science and clinical skills. Various elements are incorporated into the programmes such as anatomy and physiology; pathology and therapeutics; vision science; and practical skills that we will need for the future.
“The course has a strong practical component and provides many opportunities to apply the theory and knowledge you have just learnt in lectures. Small class sizes and the Optometry Student Society create a supportive tightknit community where you can easily find help with study or just enjoy social events.
“A Bachelor of Optometry has high job security, a good salary and many perks to the profession. Upon graduation, I hope to practice in either NZ or Australia and eventually own my store.
“I was awarded the University of Auckland Jubilee Award, which helped pay for living costs and fees associated with living away from home.
“I have also recently completed a Summer Research Scholarship. This was a unique experience and provided exposure to research as another career path.”
