The Second Mental Health and Social Justice Symposium

February 16th -17th, 2015

Call for papers

You are invited to a two-day symposium for researchers studying at the interface of mental health and social justice in Aotearoa.

The aims of the symposium are to showcase recent work, foster in-depth discussion and promote long-term networking among researchers in this field.

Keynote speakers will include Professor Bernadette McSherry, the Foundation Director of the Melbourne Social Equity Institute at the University of Melbourne, who will give a public address on the first evening of the two-day event.

This invitation calls for papers that recognize the dignity of every human being and which will generate focused discussions on equality, solidarity and human rights in mental health.

Abstracts are particularly welcomed from individuals studying mental health and social justice in relation to:

  • Ethnicity and culture
  • Specific at-risk groups, e.g. refugees, prisoners and young people
  • Sexuality and sexual identity
  • Social exclusion/inclusion
  • The legal system
  • Violence and trauma
  • Women’s issues
  • Service user led research
  • Translational research

Places will be strictly limited in order foster roundtable discussion sessions and facilitate networking between the growing number of researchers focused on making a difference for people who experience mental health and addiction problems and/or intellectual disability.

Deadline for submission is October 31st 2014. Participants will be notified of whether or not their submission has been accepted for presentation no later than November 28th 2014.
