International alcohol and drug expert to visit Auckland in August

The Centre for Addiction Research, in partnership with the School of Pharmacy, is hosting 2013 ASB Visiting Professor Thomas F. Babor from the University of Connecticut, Farmington, USA, during his visit to the University of Auckland in August

An internationally-recognised addiction research expert, ASB Visiting Professor Babor will be delivering a number of seminars and workshops to University students and staff during his visit, as well as a public lecture on 'Alcohol marketing, the alcohol industry and their impact on binge drinking by adolescents'.  Professor Babor will also be presenting several seminars for researchers and others working in the alcohol and drugs field during his time with the Centre.

Dr Babor is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Community Medicine and Health Care at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, USA. He has studied alcoholism in France, investigated determinants of alcohol self-administration in laboratory research, and has managed multi-centre clinical trials of alcohol treatments and brief interventions. He is involved in strategic planning processes at the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA, particularly around alcohol initiatives. He is an expert member of a number of international groups at WHO Geneva, including the Expert Advisory Panel on Drug Dependence and Alcohol Problems, and the Working Group on Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders International Advisory Group for the Revision of ICD-10 Mental and Behavioural Disorders. Dr Babor is Associate Editor-in-Chief as well as Regional Editor of the international journal, Addiction. His research interests include alcohol screening, diagnosis, early intervention, and treatment evaluation, as well as alcohol and drug policy. He is the author or co-author of over 130 articles and 60 book chapters, and has written or edited more than 15 books and monographs.
