Obstetrics and Gynaecology Research Seminar - October

Dr Fiona Brownfoot is a clinician scientist at the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is a consultant obstetrician gynaecologist and post-doctoral fellow at the Mercy Hospital for Women.

Her research focus is identifying medical treatments for preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy. Currently the only way to treat preeclampsia is to deliver the pregnancy. At early gestations, delivery leads to high rates of death and disability in the premature baby.

In her talk Fiona will discuss possible medical treatments for preeclampsia being developed by the team she works in at Mercy Hospital. They have demonstrated that these potential compounds, all of which are safe in pregnancy, improve key aspects of the preeclampsia disease process in vitro using primary human placental tissues. The team is now progressing these concepts to clinical trial and will commence treating patients with preeclampsia with these medications in Australia and South Africa in 2018.
