Margaret Wilsher

Our annual inaugural lecture series provide a way for our faculty to celebrate and recognise the mark of distinction conferred by the University when it awards the title of professor.

Join us to celebrate the inaugural lecture of Professor Margaret Wilsher.

‘A career in nine lessons’

Combining clinical practice and academic pursuits is always challenging although ultimately rewarding. The addition of a substantial administrative and leadership role adds to considerable juggling of the diary, particularly on children’s sports days.

Professor Wilsher shares some lessons learnt in a career in respiratory medicine and health leadership, and presents some of the outputs of her research in sarcoidosis.

Professor Margaret Wilsher graduated in medicine at the University of Otago last century. She subsequently trained as a respiratory physician at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland and the Royal Brompton Hospital, London returning to the post of respiratory physician which she has continue to occupy since.

Along the way she has tried to consolidate a research career, enjoyed teaching students and post graduate adult learners, and taken on a number of administrative tasks starting with the department roster.

That in turn has led to a number of national roles in health leadership and governance, and a fair bit of time in the air. She has held honorary appointments at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Auckland throughout that time.
