Our annual inaugural lecture series provide a way for our faculty to celebrate and recognise the mark of distinction conferred by the University when it awards the title of professor.

Join us to celebrate the inaugural lecture of Professor Michelle Glass.

‘A random walk through the cannabis field’

Since the discovery of the cannabinoid receptor almost 30 years ago, cannabinoids have held promise as a valid pharmacological target.  However, despite reported medicinal use of cannabis stretching back over 2000 years, there are still only a handful of pharmaceutical grade products on the market. The field has remained somewhat trapped in the no mans land between unbelievable claims of wonder cures, and slow but steady scientific progress towards genuine therapeutics.

At the same time, more potent synthetic cannabinoids have been developed and quickly picked up for recreational use, increasing the red tape around our research, and in New Zealand resulting in development of the Psychoactive Substance Act.

Professor Glass’s career has focused on understanding the role of the cannabinoid receptor in cell signalling, in healthy and diseased cells, and this talk will focus on some of the highlights along the way.

Biography:

Professor Glass has a BSc in Biochemistry and then PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Auckland with Mike Dragunow and Richard Faull, primarily focussed on mapping the cannabinoid receptor in the human brain .

Five years post doctoral fellowship at the NIH in Bethesda Maryland on signalling of cannabinoid receptors, before returning as a lecturer in Pharmacology at the University of Auckland.

Six years as HoD of Pharmacology before moving onto academic director of the School of Medical Sciences last year.
