Patients and people sit at the heart of the Auckland Academic Health Alliance which has been established to strengthen this patient-focussed partnership by developing our health workforce, informing research and invigorating clinical teaching and education. As part of the launch of the Auckland Academic Health Alliance, Honorary Professor Ralph Stewart and Honorary Professor Peter Ruygrok will present their Inaugural Professorial Lectures at the University.

Inaugural Lecture: Professor Ralph Stewart "A Brief History of Cardiology"

After qualifying in medicine at the University of Otago, Ralph Stewart trained in cardiology at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School and Hammersmith Hospital in London, UK. Professor Stewart returned to New Zealand and worked in Dunedin before moving to Green Lane Hospital in 1999.

Today Professor Stewart works at the Auckland City Hospital, the Green Lane Cardiovascular Research Unit and with the Auckland Heart Group. He is an Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Auckland and his extensive range of clinical and research interests include cardiovascular risk assessment, valve disease, ischaemic heart disease and hypertension.

In his Inaugural Lecture Professor Stewart will draw on personal experiences to discuss the forces which have driven progress in cardiology over the last 30 years, and what he views as important current and future challenges to medicine.

Inaugural lecture: Professor Peter Ruygrok "Of Masses and Men: The ageing population - evolution and impact of interventional cardiology”

Professor Peter Ruygrok graduated Bachelor of Science in Mathematics in 1979, Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery in 1986 and more recently Doctor of Medicine, from the University of Auckland. Professor Ruygrok trained in cardiology at Green Lane Hospital, gaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and then completed an interventional fellowship at the Thoraxcenter in Rotterdam.

Today Professor Ruygrok works as a consultant cardiologist and has recently been appointed the Director of Cardiovascular Services at Auckland City Hospital in addition to working with the Auckland Heart Group. Professor Ruygrok is an Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Auckland and his special interests include interventional cardiology, cardiac transplantation and research, and he has more than 130 publications in peer-reviewed journals to his name.
