Speaking Up: directed communication with read-back is effective in a simulated clinical crisis

Communication of clinically important information is vital for optimal patient safety. We used ‘information probes’ and video recordings of simulated clinical crises to study information transfer. Much of the information was not mentioned but when it was, directed utterances that were responded to with read-back dramatically improved the chances of successful information transfer. Information probes are an interesting and useful tool for studying clinical communication.
