Monoclonal antibody-based drugs represent the fastest growing sector of the pharmaceutical industry and drugs of this class now dominate the global lists of the biggest-selling medicines. Based on my 8 years’ experience working in the Biopharm R&D unit of GlaxoSmithKline, this talk will review some of the factors driving the growth of biopharmaceuticals with a focus on the rapidly developing technologies for their discovery and optimization. In addition, I will introduce the capabilities of the Christchurch-based Callaghan Innovation Protein Science and Engineering team and how we hope to provide expert support for protein and antibody engineering challenges within research groups and biotech companies across New Zealand.
