Fa’asisila Savila - Research Officer with the PIF study. PhD candidate and Professor Elaine Rush - AUT

The longitudinal Pacific Island Families (PIF) study of 1398 Pacific children born at Middlemore hospital in the year 2000, has shown that in these children’s rate of  growth is rapid and the prevalence of overweight and obesity is 70% at age 9 years.  Growth curves for the PIF  have been developed and food patterns examined at ages 4 and 6 years.  This and other evidence from this unique study will be presented alongside the question – what can be done?

Fa’asisila Savila, research officer with the PIF study is undertaking a PhD to examine the food, family and physical environments in which this  rapid growth occurs.  He will be supported by Professor Elaine Rush who has been involved with this study since it’s inception.
