Every year many patients are harmed because of medication errors. As a consequence there has been a significant movement in trying to improve the safety of medication use. The term “medication safety” is commonly used to describe this field of research and practice. Despite the efforts in improving medication safety it is unclear whether progress has been made. Limitations in currently available tools and metric systems have hindered our ability to know. But as this presentation will argue, one main reason has been an underdeveloped conceptual framework on the determinants of improvement of medication safety. This presentation will outline the research method and findings of a PhD study so far.
