Molecular Medicine and Pathology seminar series: Assisted reproductive technologies: where to draw the line Event as iCalendar

22 November 2011

3:30 - 4:30pm

Venue: Seminar Room 501-505, Building 501, 85 Park Road, Grafton

Currently 1 in 7 couples in New Zealand will need assistance to have a family, and this is expected to get worse in the future, primarily as women decide to delay having children until later in life.

The area of human assisted reproductive technology advances at an astonishing rate. While these technologies offer many potential benefits for infertile couples, there are also uncertainties, risks, and unknowns. For that reason, a society sometimes decides what new and existing technologies should be available, and which should not. This can be a difficult decision to make, as there are many different viewpoints to consider. During this seminar, I will describe the age-dependent decline in fertility, some of the recent advances in assisted reproductive technologies, and highlight some of the ethical, moral and spiritual issues that arise with these new scientific advances.
