Gene therapy strategies for neurological diseases have primarily focused on the genetic manipulation of neurons. However, given that neuronal cell loss but reactive gliosis are common features of many neurological diseases, astrocytes, prevalent and dysfunctional in the diseased brain, are an attractive cellular target for new genetic therapies.

Here, I’ll provide an overview and update on gene therapy for brain diseases and some of the new strategies being developed in this area.
