Recent brain science is revealing how we can use the mechanisms of experience-dependent neuroplasticity to stimulate and strengthen the neural substrates of positive states of mind. This talk will explore: the impact of mindfulness on the brain; the benefits and pitfalls of bringing neuroscience into mindfulness and mental health practices, including psychotherapy; and how to help ourselves and those we care for activate the neural basis for self-compassion and a basic sense of safety - the foundations of healing old wounds, personal growth, spritual practice, and any therapeutic work.
Key features of your marvelous nervous system. Neuroplasticity: how mental activity sculpts neural structure so you can use your mind to change your brain to change your mind and thus your life for the better. The impact of mindful attention, which turbocharges the formation of new neural circuits. The motivating power of realizing you're making lasting changes inside your own brain. Foundation practices: the felt sense of being with someone who cares about you; self-compassion; getting on your own side; using little things in daily life to gradually transform yourself. Why our planet needs us to take charge of our caveman brains in the 21st century.
