Research interests


Professor Andrew Hill completed a MD in Surgery from the University of Auckland in 1996 and an EdD from the University of Auckland in 2011. Following a research fellowship at Harvard University in 1993 and 1994, Andrew completed surgical training in 1997 and worked in Kenya as a medical missionary. Andrew then returned to the South Auckland Clinical School at Middlemore Hospital in 2002, where he now practises as a General and Colorectal surgeon. Andrew was the recipient of a Vice Chancellor's early career research excellence award in 2004 and a Butland award for excellence in medical education leadership in 2007.

Andrew is also involved in the development of academic surgeons through involvement in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons academic section and the Society for Academic Surgeons and runs the annual Developing a Career as an Academic Surgeons course (DCAS).

Research

Andrew’s research interests are in improving outcomes from major abdominal surgery and medical education. He has published over 120 peer reviewed papers in these areas. Andrew leads the Auckland Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (AERAS) Group which is an interdisciplinary research group aiming to improve patient outcomes after major surgery. The Group runs a once yearly international symposium on enhancing recovery.
