Enhancing health and wellbeing through:
- Critical social sciences in action
- Building community capacity
- Innovative practical research
- Strengthening culture and place
Social and Community Health (SCH) is an application of interdisciplinary social
sciences to community and organizational contexts. Disciplines involved include
psychology, psychiatry, sociology, Māori health development, anthropology, health
promotion and other related social science disciplines.
Its perspective spans public, community and individual health. The main emphasis is on how health, both
physical and mental, relates to people in their everyday living contexts, both as individuals and as
members of families, communities, and cultures.
The section began in 2003 as a new enterprise based on developments in current research
and theory. It includes staff from the previous departments of Behavioural Science
and Community Health and emphasizes interdisciplinary and collaborative work and
on issues facing New Zealand society.
