The department emphasises the value of community based teaching.
Second year students
are attached to a general practice for one visit in an observational capacity.
Fourth year students are attached to the department for four weeks of which two weeks are
spent attached to an urban practitioner and two weeks are in a rural practice. Each
Monday of the urban attachment is spent at the department with small group tutorials
and some lectures and Wednesday mornings are in small group tutorials also. The
remainder of the time is spent in clinical work in an active general practice.
Fifth year students are attached to the department for two weeks which are spent in urban
practice. Mondays are small group tutorials and lectures. The remainder of the time
is spent in clinical work in an active general practice.
Sixth year [trainee intern]
students spend between four and six weeks in the department, virtually all of which
is spent in clinical work attached to both urban and rural practices.
Selection
of general practice teachers
Teachers of general practice in the fourth and fifth years
are appointed as Clinical Senior Lecturers and Clinical Lecturers to The University
of Auckland and are required to undergo a University selection process. These are general practitioners who have the appropriate postgraduate
qualifications and are willing to accept students in their practices. They are required
to attend both initial and followup training programmes.
Student portfolios
Each student in the fourth and fifth year is issued with a portfolio which accompanies them
during the attachment.
Logbook
Each student, starting from year four, is issued with
a logbook of clinical skills and experiences which is filled in and which accompanies
them until they graduate.
