Directed by Professor Shanthi Ameratunga with Co-Director Dr Bridget Kool, this group collaborates with research partners across the School,
the Departments of Paediatrics, Surgery, and Psychological Medicine at the School of Medicine, District Health Boards of Auckland, Counties Manukau,
Waitemata and Waikato, the Injury Prevention Research Unit (University of Otago), and several international groups. The strategic priorities
reflected in the multi-disciplinary research programme include generating policy-relevant evidence to prevent road traffic crashes and promote
active modes of travel; injuries at home; interventions to reduce alcohol-related trauma; optimising the care of children with head injuries,
and providing research leadership for the development of innovative integrated models of pre-hospital and acute trauma service delivery.
The team has secured over $10M in research funding from the Health Research Council of NZ, the Wellcome Trust, the Accident Compensation Corporation,
ALAC, and the Ministry of Health. Funded by an International Collaborative Research Grant, researchers are also actively engaged in developing the
capacity and capability for injury prevention in the Pacific, partnering with the Fiji School of Medicine and Departments of Health in Fiji, Samoa
and Palau. Other international collaborations involve The George Institute for International Health (University of Sydney), the Victorian State-wide
Trauma Registry (Monash University), Road Traffic Injury Research Network (Global Forum for Health Research) and the Global Road Safety Partnership (World Bank).
Members of the team serve on several national and international research and policy committees including the New Zealand Injury Prevention Strategy
Stakeholder Reference Group, NZ Trauma Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Injury Prevention Network of Aotearoa New Zealand,
and regional transport and environmental health groups. Academic and professional training is an important focus with major contributions to several
graduate / postgraduate courses at the University of Auckland, the National Certificate in Injury Prevention, and workshops in the Pacific and further afield.
The team works closely with Gay Richards, Manager of the Injury Prevention
Information Centre based at the School, and Auckland UniServices Ltd.
