Overview

  • BMJ Books – Qualitative Research in Health Care website - contains the full online text of - Pope, Catherine and Mays, Nicholas (Eds), 1999, Qualitative Research in Health Care¸ 2nd Edition, BMJ Books, London. Chapter topics include: qualitative methods, interviews, focus groups, observation, Delphi and nominal group techniques, case studies, action research, case studies, analysis.
  • University of Windsor, California - basic overview of steps involved in qualitative research (from a course in qualitative research methodology).
  • Social Science Information Gateway – Qualitative Methods - lists a number of online resources and journals relating to qualitative methodology.

Courses

  • Shippensburg University, Pennsylvania. - An "e-text" workbook prepared for a Qualitative Research Methods course.
  • University of British Columbia, Vancouver - Online course that contains an extensive list of internal and external links to documents detailing qualitative researching ethnographic approaches, interviewing, focus groups, questionnaires, software, ethics, analysis, action research, case studies.
  • Gonzaga University, Washington - Introduction of the assumptions, theories and practice of qualitative research. Covers recording data, interviewing and focus groups, coding, theoretical approaches, interpretation and ethics.

Course notes, online textbooks & other evaluation resources

  • Community Toolbox, University of Kansas - Extensive resources for evaluating community Programs and initiatives.
  • Web-based textbook - Includes extracts from "Research Methods Knowledge Base" covering material on evaluation and other social science methods. Written by William Trochim, Cornell University.
  • Bureau of Justice Assistance Evaluation (USA) - Contains resource material about evaluation in general, and in relation to criminal justice system.
  • Claremont Graduate University - Includes resource material and an online course about evaluation issues for students and evaluators (instructor is Michael Scriven).

  • University of Texas Houston Health Science Centre - Tips for interview techniques in focus groups including skills of listening, paraphrasing, probing and note taking.
  • University of Arizona, Institute for Children, Youth and Families - Overview of uses of focus groups, advantages and disadvantages, skills and strategies for successful moderation and participation.

  • Surviving Ethnography: Coping with Isolation, Violence and Anger by Jennifer Harris The Qualitative Report, Volume 3, Number 1, March, 1997 Article containing an account of experiences novice ethnographers may face, but be unprepared for. The author relates to her experiences working with a deaf community in Britain.
  • A Handbook of Ethnography, University of Lancaster, UK Site contains sections on what ethnography is, uses, and practicalities.
