CALD Courses for Waitemata DHB

A recently completed project for the Waitemata District Health Board (WDHB), led by Perrin Rowland of the GFU, was the development of an online version of the WDHBs successful Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) training module. The first of four modules went live a few weeks ago, with three more to follow over the next 18 months.

The Race Relations Commissioner, Joris de Bres, writing in the Human Rights Commission (HRC) April Newsletter, On the Bright Side, acknowledged the WDHB for this development: ‘For the Culturally and Linguistically Diverse website, 2010. WDHB's Asian Health Support Services group have transported the highly successful CALD learning tools and resources to the web, making the training accessible to a wider audience. This step completes Phase 2 of a five phase plan.

In line with Ministry of Health requirements and in response to an increasingly diverse population, CALD courses teach health practitioners how to provide services that "acknowledge the diversity of cultures and ensure services are accessible, culturally appropriate, effective and safe."

The new website also hosts links, news, a forum and electronic toolkits, and is intended to grow. They have also developed a 24-7 Waitemata Auckland Translation and Interpreting Service (WATIS) for primary and secondary care services and a range of Asian culture-specific services for the DHB.

Visit CALD's new website: www.caldresources.org.nz

Our congratulations go to Perrin and the team she assembled for this project.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Sports Medicine programme has experienced a positive transformation to assist students with learning the material more effectively. A number of staff from the past and present have supported and nurtured the programme. Notably, the Goodfellow Unit would like to acknowledge Dr Chris Hanna’s great contribution to the programme over the past decade. We wish him all the best for his future endeavours at Adidas Sports Medicine. Dr Celeste Geertsema has been teaching the programme since 2008. In addition to her teaching responsibility, she assumes the new role of programme co-ordinator. Celeste is a Sports Physician at Adidas Sports Medicine and has been the team doctor for the New Zealand Men's Football Team for the past six years. She is also the medical director for Canoe Racing New Zealand. She has a special interest in travelling with teams, as well as football and winter sports injuries. Dr Mark Fulcher is now based in Wellington and continues to provide invaluable input to the programme development.

We also welcome Dr Jake Pearson  who recently joined the unit to deliver teaching and learning material for the programme. Outside his work at the unit Jake enjoys staying active and healthy, and is mainly involved in Taekwon-Do and running. He also works at Adidas Sports Medicine and is the current medical director for the NZ Black Sox softball team.
