School of Population Health What we can offer

The centre can offer the following independent, university-based professional research and evaluation services:

Teaching

CAHRE is involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching on a wide range of topics. At the undergraduate level, topics addressed include: cross-cultural communication, cultural models and the diversity of the Asian population in health promotion, and research methods when working cross-culturally. At a post-graduate level, topics include: Asian people and mental health, Asian people and gambling, cultural models in health promotion, and complex populations and professional issues in therapy settings. Following the expansion of the scope of the centre, research and education topics will broaden in future to include the perspectives of other Ethnic Minority communities.

Workforce training

One focus of CAHRE, is the development of workforce training initiatives. To date, workforce training initiatives have been implemented to address a variety of topics, such as cultural competence training, working cross-culturally with Asian people in mental health settings, domestic violence in Chinese communities, the interplay between migration and mood problems for Asian people, and working with international students. CAHRE has also produced an interactive CD teaching package on "Asian mental health: Training and development for real skills". This provides entry level training on Asian mental health to health and social services students nationwide (commissioned by Te Pou, The National Centre of Mental Health Research, Information and Workforce Development). Furthermore, CAHRE has supported close to ten postgraduate research students to pursue their masters and doctoral studies on health issues concerning the New Zealand Asian population. In future, CAHRE intends to widen the focus of subsequent workforce training development activities to include other Ethnic Minority communities.
