The Waikato Clinical School's Department of Psychological Medicine is an active research centre on classification
of Mental Health. This research is led by Professor Graham Mellsop supported by Mrs Gaelle Dutu (Research Fellow in statistics) and with
participation of a large number of Waikato and international co-workers. With support from World
Health Organisation (WHO) and
the NZ Ministry of Health there are a number of ongoing projects seeking to define what different
user groups seek from a classificatory system. Involvement of Primary Health Care has been in conjunction
with Dr Steven Lillis. There is research primarily in New Zealand, but with some international arms.
Research in two other areas - service outcomes and culture are ongoing.
Associate Professor David Menkes
has been
exploring his interest in the pharmacology, toxicology and sociology
of drug treatments in
psychiatry and has developed an interest in cardiovascular risk management in people with mental
health problems.
The group is under the aegis of the
Department of Psychological Medicine of The University of Auckland and
facilitates teaching of fourth and sixth year medical students,
led by Dr Wayne de Beer and Dr Kadhem Majeed respectively.
