Research within the department has a number of strands including - Mental Health, Diabetes, Education, Heart Failure and Thyroid Disease. Research has been conducted by Prof Ross Lawrenson, Dr Steven Lillis and Mrs Veronique Gibbons (Research Fellow). Much of this research has been in conjunction with local General Practitioners. The department is also committed to research into Rural Health Care issues and has two part-time Senior Lecturers in Rural Health Care, Dr Rachel Thomson and Dr Jo Scott-Jones.

The group is under the aegis of The University of Auckland's Department of General Practice and Primary Health Care.
