I recently completed my PhD and I am currently awaiting examination.
1. Computerised delivery of a cognitive behavioural intervention for the treatment of depression in young people
I am currently leading Youth E-Therapy Project, funded by the Ministry of Health, which aims to build on the work I had carried out previously in my PhD.
Aims of the project
- To develop a developmentally appropriate computer-administered self-help programme for adolescents suffering from depression
- To evaluate the usability and effectiveness of the programme in primary health care and school settings
The content of the programme will be based on the cognitive-behavioural techniques for dealing with the symptoms of depression (e.g. dealing with negative thoughts, problem-solving, activity scheduling, relaxation) and will address interpersonal, family, risk and protective factors for depression. The programme will be a 3D character-based game for the PC platform incorporating full 3D environments and characters, video, sound, text and music. The perspective will be third person and the user will be able to choose and control their character.
We will evaluate the usability and effectiveness of the programme in PHO settings and high schools. We will work with PHOs across New Zealand. We will compare the programme with routine care provided by general practitioners and school guidance counsellors. Other settings such as CAMHS may be considered for inclusion as study sites. Website recruitment may also be included.
2. Infant mental health and parenting support programme
I am also supporting a pilot trial of an intensive parenting support programme in Counties Manukau DHB. The programme is an adaptation of a successful intervention (called Mellow Parenting) for Maori mothers and is offered by the Ohomairangi Trust. If successful, we will aim to run a large trial next year.
