School of Medicine Assessments

Assessment for the psychiatry ward block is based on:

  1. Clinical teacher's assessment of performance on the unit.
    Information on Clinical Attachment
  2. Case Histories
You have two case histories to submit. One will be randomly chosen for marking. If it is a fail, the other case history will then be assessed. If the second case history is still a fail, there is a chance that you will be asked to do a direct selective or some remedial work.

The two case histories are submitted on the last week. There will be no extensions.

  3. A Critically Appraised Topic (CAT). This will follow the format provided by Associate Professor Rod Jackson, in the Community Health/Epidemiology campus block teaching. The CAT should be focused on a patient-based clinical decision problem. It may consider aetiology, prognosis, diagnosis, treatment on cost effectiveness. The CAT should be handed into the department by 4 p.m. on the last Friday of the run. You will discuss your CAT with your clinical team. Your supervising consultant will mark your CAT based on the guidelines found in the logbook.

The consultant will indicate on the clinical attachment report whether this presentation has been satisfactory. Schedule your CAT presentation weeks before the actual date. Make sure your consultant is present to mark it.

  4. Logbook - to be handed into the department by 4pm on the last Friday of the run. It is marked pass or fail depending on the number and quality of entries. Waikato students must hand in their logbooks and case histories at Waikato on the last day of their run. These will then be sent to the School of Medicine in Auckland by the Secretary at Waikato.
  5. Mid run OSCE. A required formative OSCE which is not marked. However, attendance is required to pass the course. This is a good way to familiarise the student with the end of the year OSCE.
