School of Medicine Postgraduate teaching in the Department of Anaesthesiology

The department provides two masters level papers which are run in the Department of Anaesthesiology at the Mercy Campus. These are:

  • The Pharmacology of Anaesthetics and Analgesics MEDSCI 718
  • Biological Clocks MEDSCI 738

The department also offers special topic papers. If you are interested in these please contact Dr Guy Warman at g.warman@auckland.ac.nz.

Postgraduate research

Masters and PhD students are currently working under the supervision of staff in the department. The research being conducted by postgraduate students ranges from clinical studies of the effects of drugs used during anaesthesia through to investigation of the performance of anaesthetists and the modelling of the EEG and sleep.

Currently, we have the following postgraduate students working with us, or under our joint supervision.

  • Ms Eva Winnebeck is investigating the effect of general anaesthesia on the circadian clock using honey bees as a model system.
  • Ms Amanda Potts is investigating the PK/PD of the alpha 2 adrenoceptor agonist dexmedetomidine.
  • Mr R Subramainium is conducting a PhD investigating the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism under the co-supervision of Professor Jamie Sleigh.
  • Mrs. Deena Benjamin (PhD student, AUT) is investigating the possibility of intra-operative diagnosis using computational methods under the co-supervision of Dr. Michael Harrison.
  • Ms Lara Wilcox is conducting a PhD investigating simulations and stability of the Wright EEG equations under the co-supervision of Professor Jamie Sleigh.

Recently completed degrees from the department include the PhD of Dr James Cheeseman, Dr Craig Webster and the MSc theses of Ms Anisoara Jardim, Ms Yasamin Al-Tiay and Ms Amanda Potts.

If you are interested in conducting a research project with us please contact the department's Postgraduate Adviser Dr Guy Warman at g.warman@auckland.ac.nz.
