The Department of Anaesthesiology provides a number of short courses to develop
health practitioners' skills in resuscitation and acute care. These can be delivered
on site or at the Simulation Centre for Patient Safety.
Anaesthetists became involved very early in the history of medical simulation and
worldwide they continue to develop its use in education and research.
Simulation techniques used by the department are designed to suit learner needs but
include scenario training with debriefing, part-task trainers for technical skills,
use of standardised patients (actors), computer-based activities, videos and educational
games.
These are conducted in a purpose-built facility with ward simulation areas,
using state-of-the-art computerised manikins and actual clinical equipment.
We have a special interest and expertise in the impact of human factors
on the provision of safe patient care by individuals and teams.
Technical skills training is thus complemented by exploration of specific
teamwork skills including communication and enhanced understanding of human factors
by participants.
Participants can expect to work in teams in managing scenarios and teams will be
multidisciplinary where this would be the case in clinical practice.
Simulation-based courses on peri-operative acute care are regularly available for:
- Specialists and trainee anaesthetists
- Anaesthetic technicians and nurses
- Post Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU) nurses
Courses for other acute care groups such as Emergency Department (ED) /
Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses and doctors are convened
by arrangement and after consultation on learners' educational requirements.
Specific training courses can be developed for your needs. Space can be booked for
your training of health professionals.
Courses are subject to cancellation if the minimum number of registrants is not
met and the course becomes unviable to proceed with.
A minimum of two weeks notice is required to avoid cancellation penalties.
