Research interests

Research in this area is focused on the structure of the heart and how this influences both the spread of cardiac electrical activation and the mechanical performance of the heart. Current projects include a quantitative analysis of the architecture of muscle fibre layers in the heart and the role of cardiac connective tissue in this organization. An innovative imaging system is being developed to study the deformation of these structures under both passive and active mechanical loading. These studies will provide new insight into the way in which stress and deformation are distributed through the walls of the normal and abnormal heart.
