Principal investigator
I moved back
to New Zealand from London in Sept 2004 and my research here will continue to be
in the broad area of signal transduction related to type-2 diabetes.
Type-2 diabetes
is reaching epidemic proportions in the world and New Zealand is no exception. The
causes and consequences of Type-2 diabetes are tightly linked with defects in the
way insulin works, a condition termed "insulin resistance". The insulin resistant
and diabetic states are associated with a deranged metabolic state in which glucose
and lipid levels are elevated and altogether these factors are key to the development
of the severe complications associated with diabetes. These complications include
blindness, kidney failure and circulatory problems that result in limb amputations
and heart disease.
