The Biomedical Imaging Research Unit (BIRU) has:

• suitable for imaging fixed specimens: a Leica TCS SP2 confocal laser scanning microscope
• suitable for imaging slides: an Olympus FV1000 confocal system
• an Olympus FV1000 confocal system specialised for live cell imaging
• a Zeiss LSM 710 inverted confocal microscope
• access to the Liggins' Institute Zeiss LSM510 META confocal microscope.

Confocal laser scanning microscopy enables optical sectioning through thick specimens. In order to use confocal microscopy, specimens must be either fluorescent or reflective.
