Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences Admission criteria for school-leavers

New Zealand and Australian citizens and permanent residents

The following information on National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) and Cambridge International Examination (CIE) applies to New Zealand and Australian citizens and permanent residents.

Please note that the actual grade or mark required to qualify for entry to a specific programme (namely health sciences, nursing or pharmacy) will vary from year to year depending on the number and standard of applicants. In many cases selection will be based both on academic marks and an interview.

Some first year courses within the Bachelor of Science programme (especially those courses required for the biomedical science specialisation) require a higher admission standard.  Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) applicants are advised to consult the Faculty of Science undergraduate prospectus or phone the Faculty of Science Student Centre on +64 9 373 7599 ext 87020 for further information.

International students

International students will be ranked separately and will need to obtain higher levels than those listed here.  International students may also need to meet additional English language requirements.

For further information, please contact the International Office.

Admission criteria for NCEA participants

Secondary school students wishing to apply for entry into the faculty's programmes must gain the University Entrance Standard and be selected into a programme.

Information on requirements for gaining the University Entrance Standard

Limited entry programmes

In addition to gaining the University Entrance Standard, all applicants will be ranked according to their best 80 credits in approved subjects at level 3 or higher over a maximum of 5 subjects, weighted by the level of achievement attained in each set of credits.

Students with fewer than 80 credits are encouraged to apply. It is possible for a student with fewer than 80 credits, but with a number of 'excellent' or 'merit' results to be ranked above a student with 80 credits.

Level 3 credits may be gained in no more than two consecutive years, but in exceptional circumstances credits gained over more than two consecutive years may be considered. Level 3 Unit Standards will be weighted the same as 'achieve' in level 3 Achievement Standards.

Applicants for some limited entry programmes may be required to have taken specific subjects and gained a specific number of credits in these subjects.
