Māori and Pacific Admission Scheme (MAPAS)
On this page...
What is MAPAS
MAPAS is a supportive environment and structure where students, their whānau and
staff accept a commitment to academic achievement within a Māori/Pacific context.
MAPAS is available to FMHS applicants with indigenous Māori or Pacific whakapapa/ancestry
and provides both admission into and support during study within the Pharmacy (BPharm),
Medicine (MBChB), Nursing (BNurs),
Bachelor of Health Sciences
(BHSc) and the Certificate
in Health Sciences (CertHSc) programmes of the FMHS.
MAPAS is co-ordinated by Te Kupenga Hauora Māori
(Department of Māori Health), and
is an integral part of Vision 20:20 - a Faculty of Medical and Health Science initiative
that aims to increase the number of Māori and Pacific graduates.

Procedure for selection under MAPAS
Eligibility
All applicants to MAPAS must produce verification of Māori or Indigenous Pacific whakapapa/ancestry on the day of their interview.
Interview Process
Applicants who successfully apply under MAPAS (i.e. provide verified MAPAS eligibility
and formal application to programme of study) will be invited to attend a MAPAS
interview.
The MAPAS interview process has five components:
- Pōwhiri - applicants and their
whānau attend a Māori welcome onto Waipapa Marae at the beginning of their interview
day.
- Multiple Mini Interview - applicants will rotate through a number
of stations using a variety of methods to assess the most appropriate academic pathway. Station methods may include problem solving,
scenarios, role playing and one on
one discussions. Areas of interest include an applicant's
exposure to science (chemistry,
biology and physics), career aspirations, communication skills and self perceived whānau support.
- Maths test - basic numeracy skills are tested.
- English literacy test - basic literacy skills are tested.
- Whānau/family feedback - applicants are invited to receive the outcomes of their assessment with
their whānau on the day of the interview. This feedback will be based on our assessment
of the multiple mini-interview, maths test and English test and will include our
recommended academic pathway (based on
the interview findings).
Applicants need to
be prepared to spend one whole day on the interview process (within
0800 to 1800) which will be held in Auckland in mid-December (usually the week prior
to the week of Christmas).
The interviews are usually held over 3-4 days and an applicant's confirmed day may
not be available until a week before their interview date. Please be available for
all 3-4 days of the interview timeframe.
Final notification of acceptance into faculty programmes under MAPAS is usually
not possible until mid-late January when Year 13 (NCEA/Cambridge) results are received.
