Applications for the
Bachelor of Health Sciences (BHSc) programme close 08 December of the preceding year.
Duration: Three years (six semesters)
The Bachelor of Health Sciences degree prepares graduates for a broad range
of health-related careers. Drawing together the Faculties of Medical and Health
Sciences, Law, Arts, Commerce and Science, the BHSc degree provides a multidisciplinary
understanding of health, healthcare and health services in New Zealand.
The BHSc
is a non-clinical programme of study that provides students with an understanding
of the biological, social and behavioural bases of the western medical system as
preparation for a career in the health sector and related industries. The programme
focuses upon the health of populations, considering issues such as the socio-economic
and behavioural factors affecting health and health provision, the role governments
play in determining health policy, how health systems function, and the biological
and social bases of ill-health in our communities. Topics in health and society,
epidemiology, behaviour and health, health systems, healthcare ethics, Māori and
Pacific health and human biology support these subject areas.
The BHSc may also
be taken as a conjoint degree (where two degrees are taken concurrently), allowing
students to enhance professional qualifications or general degrees with specialist
health-based knowledge. Joint degrees can be obtained with the fields listed
below.
For students who want to have training in a specific discipline with a focus on
health, the ideal choice is a
Conjoint degree.
The BHSc provides an alternative entry track into the faculty's
undergraduate medical programme. At the end of the first year, students who have
taken the prescribed course of study and have obtained a minimum GPA of 6.0 (B+ average) in their courses
will then be eligible for consideration for entry into second year medicine.
