The Whakapiki Ake Project is a recruitment programme that actively engages with
rangatahi Māori enrolled in secondary schools to promote health as a career and
entry into Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences’ professional programmes. WAP
offers exposure to health career options, assistance for students to apply to
the FMHS and some financial support for successful applicants. Mature students
may also apply.
Whakapiki Ake eligibility and applications
You are eligible for the Whakapiki Ake Project (WAP) if you have verified
indigenous New Zealand Māori whakapapa/ancestry and are a citizen or permanent
resident of New Zealand. If you are interested in applying to WAP please contact
us for more information. You should apply if you are interested in any of the
activities that WAP offers or would like any advice on health career pathways in
general. You can apply to WAP by submitting the Whakapiki Ake
application online.
What does it offer?
WAP uses multiple methods to recruit Māori students and offers a range of
services. Year 13 transitioning activities provide the following:
School presentations
The WAP team presents to rangatahi Māori within their school environments. WAP
aims to present to Māori students who have taken sciences and may be interested
in health. The presentation is student focused and engages them in an
interactive way in order to promote WAP, The University of Auckland, Faculty of
Medical and Health Sciences, Certificate in Health Sciences and Auckland City.

COACH – Career Options After Certificate in Health Sciences
WAP offers a COACH programme to Year 13 students to help them begin to
transition into study at The University of Auckland and life in Auckland City.
COACH offers students:
- A two-day group-stay based at a local marae.
- A one-day Health Careers Expo held at the School of Population Health.
- A University of Auckland campus tour.
- Auckland City tour.
- Contact with key staff within the faculty at The University of Auckland.
- Exposure to Māori and Pacific role models and health professionals.
- Chaperoned travel to and from accommodation.
- Food and accommodation for the COACH programme.
A sound background in core sciences, mathematics and English is required for
students to be eligible for COACH.
Application assistance to The University of Auckland programmes
Application assistance is provided to all WAP students to enrol them online into
The University of Auckland and Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences
programmes.
